Sri Lanka will review existing trade agreement before signing new ones: President

Sri Lanka will review existing free trade agreements before singing new ones, President Anura Dissanayake has said.

“We have previously signed a free trade agreement with India. We must evaluate (vi-di-math sa-ma-lo-cha-na-yak) the benefits (sa-da-nee-ya lak-sha-na) of that agreement, and why it wasn’t successful,” Dissanayake told the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2025 organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

“It is not a matter of signing free trade agreements with any state, we must evaluate (vi-di-math sa-ma-lo-cha-na-yak) the agreements that have been signed already.

“After we have evaluated how they were implemented, how positive or negative they were to us, what were the missed opportunities, then we can proceed to signing new freed trade agreements.”
