Ghana to sign mega trade deal with China as full details emerge

The proposed “end-harvest agreement” is designed to deepen bilateral cooperation and open wider access for Ghanaian goods into China’s vast consumer market.

According to Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the deal would grant zero tariff treatment for key exports, including cocoa, shea butter, and cashew.

Officials believe the arrangement could help narrow Ghana’s trade deficit while stimulating employment across agriculture, manufacturing, and textiles. The government has increasingly prioritised export diversification as part of its broader economic strategy.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for a new float glass manufacturing facility in Accra, Ofosu-Adjare stressed the strategic importance of the partnership.

“Our two countries will be able to refine oil, textiles, and garments, and agriculture into one of the world’s largest economies,” she said, adding that Chinese input remains vital to Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.

The minister indicated that formal signing is expected in the coming weeks. If concluded, analysts say the agreement could mark one of the most consequential recent steps in Ghana-China commercial relations, with potential ripple effects across West Africa’s trade landscape.
