Bolivia has ruled out Friday leaving the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) but agreed the bloc has been mortally wounded by the Free Trade Agreements (FTA) of two of its partners with the US.
The Andean Community "is dead" said Presidents Hugo Chávez of Venezuela and Evo Morales of Bolivia Wednesday, referring to the trade bloc that their countries form part of along with Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Venezuela, which has criticized Andean nations as being overly aligned with the United States, plans to withdraw from the Andean Community of Nations, President Hugo Chavez said on Wednesday.
US Trade Representative, Robert Portman, met Trade Ministers of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries on 12 April giving rise to speculation that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the US and Caricom countries might be in the offing.
The CARICOM bloc already enjoys preferential access to the US market through the Caribbean Basin Initiative. But key textile concessions are set to expire in 2008, and the region has been losing ground to competitors in Central and South America as those countries sign free trade deals with Washington.
Colombia and Cuba may seem strange bedfellows but the stalwart US ally and its oldest adversary in Latin America are putting aside their differences to negotiate a trade deal.
Caribbean foreign ministers will discuss a possible free trade agreement with the US when they meet next week with the US trade representative.
Bill Thomas, President George W. Bush's most important congressional ally on trade liberalisation, is urging the administration to focus its energy on concluding bilateral trade deals, warning on Monday that the Doha multilateral round of talks was heading for failure because of conflicts between the US and the European Union.
