Finance Secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez stated that the Philippines is not joining the TPP, contradicting the position of Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez who renewed his interest of joining the TPP.
Malaysia does not have a bilateral agreement with Canada, so the TPP-11 could serve a way towards that goal. Malaysia is also actively exploring its trade options with Latin America.
Since NAFTA, Canada and the US have included the largest number, worldwide, of environmental clauses in their trade agreements.
Transnational supply chains have been an expanding economic actor since transnational corporations began outsourcing manufacturing to places where extremely low wages, low or non-existing labour safety standards and even slave labour prevailed or were tolerated.
“All the countries, including Japanese, are very closely following the negotiation,” outgoing Japanese ambassador Kenjiro Monji said. “Because if we have to deal with United States, we can learn from this experience. A lot.”
The struggle against TPPA is thus not yet over, but needs to be intensified as zombie TPPA-minus US proves to be worse than its predecessor.
The United States is using the TPP as a template for the draft IP chapter that it is presenting to its negotiating partners in this round. Canada, however, isn't down with that.
The Philippines is reviving its plan to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) even as the mega-trade deal pushes through without the US, the Department of Trade and Industry said.
Negotiators met for two days in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, to discuss what parts of the original deal they wished to shelve.
Canada is now the second-largest economy in the TPP11 and will push to ditch provisions in the original agreement that were offered as concessions to the US.
