Ministers from 15 Asia-Pacific countries negotiating a sprawling free trade agreement urged India on Wednesday to return to the talks as they are aiming to sign a deal by the end of the year, a Japanese official said.
The signing of the agreement will reportedly take place on October 23. The Japanese parliament will then have until year-end to ratify it.
Tokyo has said it is aiming for the deal to come into force on Jan. 1, after reaching a broad trade agreement with Britain on Sept. 11.
The economic partnership agreement between Japan and the UK will maintain preferential tariffs for industrial products manufactured with components made in the European Union in a win for Japanese automakers.
The two countries are negotiating the signing of a reciprocal investment protection agreement.
With India, Australia and Japan intent on pursuing their arrangement in parallel, the road looks relatively clear for an RCEP accord in November. Even if there are still a few points of contention, the 15 countries may sign an "agreement in principle".
Japan need a policy that is based on a major shift from industrial agriculture to agroecology by small farmers. For this to be possible Japan must pull out of TPP and other similar FTAs.
