Switzerland is taking its tally of free trade agreements up to 37 with new economic deals being signed with Thailand and Kosovo.
Kosovo Prime Minister will sign the Free Trade Agreement with the member countries of EFTA, which includes Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland.
The Norwegian Parliament has expressed positive signals regarding the long-awaited free trade agreement under negotiation since 2012 between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association, which includes Norway.
Thailand will sign a free-trade agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The agreement, approved by the Thai Cabinet, covers trade with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
The Thailand-EFTA Free Trade Agreement, scheduled for January 23, 2025, will connect Thai businesses with four wealthy European markets – Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
FTA Watch representatives warned that stricter IP rules in a potential EU FTA could impact access to medicines, increase healthcare costs, and harm Thailand's domestic pharmaceutical industry. They also highlighted concerns about EU demands regarding government procurement, plant variety protection (UPOV 1991), and import of remanufactured goods.
India's free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), signed in March 2024, is progressing towards implementation by the end of 2025. India will reduce tariffs on select EFTA goods like Swiss watches and chocolates.
Switzerland has raised concerns about its potential impact on India's trade relations, the Commerce Secretary has clarified that it will not affect the $100 billion investment commitment made by EFTA countries under the recently signed trade deal.
Norway said that it plans to ratify the India-EFTA free trade agreement next year, the commerce and industry ministry said.
