The Bulgarian government will not back the signing of a free trade agreement between the European Union and Canada until it receives irrevocable guarantees that all its citizens can travel to Canada without visas, it said on Wednesday. Romania is demanding the same.
Canada and Bulgaria have come to an agreement on a roadmap towards visa liberalisation, while the Romanian government indicated that there is a good chance of the same being granted to them in the near future as well.
Meetings in various formats have been held between Canada, the European Commission, Bulgaria and Romania, in an effort to avoid a possible veto from Sofia and Bucharest on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
The next move toward ratifying Canada's trade deal with the European Union is set when Immigration Minister John McCallum is expected in Brussels to resolve Canada's long-standing visa dispute with Romania and Bulgaria.
The ratification the EU-Canada trade agreement hangs in doubt due to the refusal of Canada to introduce reciprocity with EU countries on visa policy, by lifting the visa requirement for Bulgarians and Romanians.
