India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will hold the next round of talks to review their free trade agreement in goods in February 2025. The review aims to enhance trade between the two regions by addressing barriers and preventing misuse of the existing agreement.
The team of negotiators from Australia is expected to come to India in December to sort out the remaining issues in the negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.
ASEAN intends to sign its upgraded trade pact with China in 2025, according to the Southeast Asian bloc’s secretary-general Kao Kim Hourn.
The Philippines and the European Union (EU) are set to resume next week the negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA), which the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) wants to conclude by 2027 to ensure continued preferential market access to the bloc.
The statement covers existing areas of the China-ASEAN FTA agreement as well as emerging areas that have great cooperation potential, including the digital economy, the green economy and supply chain interconnectivity, the ministry said.
China and ASEAN are working to upgrade their free trade agreement to cover areas like e-commerce and environmental protection. This upgrade is expected to boost trade and investment between the two regions. China seeks to expand its economic ties with ASEAN amid growing tensions with the US and EU. ASEAN countries are also interested in strengthening their supplier networks in China.
ndonesia is pushing for the completion of the upgraded ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) in 2025. The agreement aims to strengthen economic cooperation among Southeast Asian countries. Indonesia has been actively involved in the negotiations and is committed to monitoring its implementation.
India and Malaysia are part of two free trade pacts – the India-ASEAN FTA (Malaysia is one of the ten ASEAN countries that are signatories to the agreement) and the India-Malaysia CECA. Both pacts are now under review.
India is looking for further tariff cuts in key items of its export interest, as part of the “complete review” of the free trade agreement with Association of South East Asian Nations.
India and Asean will meet from November 19 to 22, 2024, for the next phase of negotiations on their free trade agreement. The third round was completed in August 2023 in Jakarta. The review seeks to alleviate barriers and promote mutually beneficial trade.
