EU moves to win France's backing for Mercosur deal
The European Union plans to offer political "safeguards" to ease French concerns over a trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc, four officials familiar with the talks told the Financial Times.
The safeguards would set limits on imports of products like beef, chicken and sugar to protect EU producers. However, officials reportedly said they have not received details of the proposal but warned that these new limits could disrupt the agreement.
The move comes after France threatened to block the deal without protections for its farmers, who fear unfair competition from South American imports.
